Storytelling can be difficult to accomplish with limited tools. Ira Glass provides insights to creators that can shape their own storytelling. I found his explanation of using anecdote and reflection as building blocks for storytelling rather interesting. For one I find it hard to structure my storytelling, I have drawn from different ideologies to formulate my ideas but still feel like it’s been lacking substance.
What I found interesting is that Ira states creators miss the point in storytelling, they create such a build up that lack a tie in to the story. I see this in the rise of podcasts, many people can speak in front of a microphone but only a few have really captivated my attention. Just like Ira states, the buildup is strong and descriptive but without a reflection to why this story is being told creators fall short.
I found this truly interesting because Ira speaks on this issue 16 years ago where podcasters were barely making a scene. In today’s world, podcasts are as common as having a smart watch. Anyone and everyone is making one, a lot of them fail due to a lack of audience. Using an anecdote to build your story and tying it with a reflection piece at the end creates a neatly wrap gift any viewer can digest easily. I will use this tool in my current assignments, hoping it lives to Ira’s standards.
